Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) is Pakistan’s oldest and largest economics research institute. It was established in 1957 by the Government of Pakistan with the help of United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) now known as UNESCAP. PIDE is an autonomous, nonprofit research institute dedicated to the promotion of Pakistan’s economic development. PIDE is a member of the Islamic Development Bank Group.
PIDE’s Mission
PIDE’s Mission is “to promote Pakistan’s economic development through high quality research and policy advice.”
PIDE strives to play a leading role in Pakistan’s economic policy debates by:
– Undertaking policy-oriented research on Pakistan’s economy and publishing the findings in leading international and Pakistan journals;
– Disseminating research findings through Policy Briefs, Working Papers, Books, Monographs and Seminars/Conferences;
– Providing advice to Pakistan’s policymakers through policy notes, position papers and informal consultations;
– Training Pakistan’s economists through PhD, Masters and Certificate Programs;
– Enhancing Pakistan’s economic research capacity by supporting Pakistan’s young economists in their research endeavors.
PIDE is currently headed by Dr. Asad Zaman, who is also the Director General of the institute. PIDE has a Board of Governors which consists of Pakistan’s leading economists, businessmen and policymakers.
PIDE is Pakistan’s leading economics research institute and has made significant contributions to Pakistan’s economic development over the past few decades. PIDE’s research has been instrumental in shaping Pakistan’s economic policies and its findings have been widely disseminated through policy briefs, working papers, books, monographs and seminars/conferences.
PIDE’s research
PIDE’s research covers a wide range of topics such as Pakistan’s macroeconomic performance, poverty alleviation, employment, education, health, nutrition, water resources, energy, trade and investment, infrastructure development and governance. PIDE has a strong commitment to policy-oriented research and its findings are widely used by Pakistan’s policymakers.
PIDE is also committed to training Pakistan’s economists and enhancing Pakistan’s economic research capacity. PIDE offers PhD, Masters and Certificate Programs in Economics. The institute also supports Pakistan’s young economists in their research endeavors through its Research Fellowships Program.
